This.

[+ the classic words of Hunter S. Thompson.]

NC comic shop boycotts the new Superman. Because of Jesus.

The stupidity, if burns so fucking much sometimes.

The crux of it seems to be that while getting exploded, as Superman is wont to do, he utters "GD" - literally the letters 'g' and 'd' smashed together - which caused our comic shop owner to catch the vapors as he finds one imaginary character taking another imaginary character's name in vain just a step too far.  And to be clear, he could be saying 'god damn,' he could be grunting, or he could [and you can't put it past the mind of Grant Morrison, the dude is deep] be saying 'God' and in a tribute to Superman's Jewish creators keeping to the Jewish tradition of not writing 'god.'

Regardless, we should probably wait to see how Santa and the Easter Bunny weigh in on this vital controversy.  What a maroon, I swear.
North Carolina Comic Shop To Boycott Action Comics Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors: "This week, DC Comics published a new first issue of Action Comics, the series that introduced Superman to the world back in the nineteen thirties.
In doing so, writer Grant Morrison, who had already written the insanely successful All Star Superman comic, took the character back to his original roots. Reinvented as a social crusader, targeting big businesses that exploit their workers, the comic instantly sold out, expected to be the best selling comic in September, and has received critical acclaim from all sides.
Almost all sides.
One comic shop is North Carolina, The Comics Conspiracy, has decided enough is enough. Because of this panel..."

Technology/Progress Win - "Peak oil? Not anytime soon."

The Americas, Not the Middle East, Will Be the World Capital of Energy - By Amy Myers Jaffe | Foreign Policy: "...Meanwhile, onshore oil production in the United States, condemned to predictions of inexorable decline by analysts for two decades, is about to stage an unexpected comeback. Oil production from shale rock, a technically complex process of squeezing hydrocarbons from sedimentary deposits, is just beginning. But analysts are predicting production of as much as 1.5 million barrels a day in the next few years from resources beneath the Great Plains and Texas alone -- the equivalent of 8 percent of current U.S. oil consumption. The development raises the question of what else the U.S. energy industry might accomplish if prices remain high and technology continues to advance. Rising recovery rates from old wells, for example, could also stem previous declines. On top of all this, analysts expect an additional 1 to 2 million barrels a day from the Gulf of Mexico now that drilling is resuming. Peak oil? Not anytime soon...

This hydrocarbon-driven reordering of geopolitics is already taking place. The petropower of Iran, Russia, and Venezuela has faltered on the back of plentiful American natural gas supply: A surplus of resources in the Americas is sending other foreign suppliers scrambling to line up buyers in Europe and Asia, making it more difficult for such exporters to assert themselves via heavy-handed energy "diplomacy." The U.S. energy industry may also be able to provide the technical assistance necessary for Europe and China to tap unconventional resources of their own, scuttling their need to kowtow to Moscow or the Persian Gulf. So watch this space: America may be back in the energy leadership saddle again."

Maybe my favorite George Carlin bit - and worth listening to and scraping the brain plate clean over and over again.

"...Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But He loves you...

...I want you to know, when it comes to believing in God, I really tried. I really, really tried. I tried to believe that there is a God, who created each of us in His own image and likeness, loves us very much, and keeps a close eye on things. I really tried to believe that, but I gotta tell you, the longer you live, the more you look around, the more you realize, something is fucked up. Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the résumé of a Supreme Being. This is the kind of shit you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude..."

Hategasm/People Fucking Suck - "Mentally disabled man robbed of his epic Superman collection."

Making the rounds on the comic book websites this AM.  The geeks in the area are mobilizing to try and find the thief.  If I believed in hell, there'd be a special circle for this level of hateful douchebaggery.  Hopefully, the powers of the internets brings about some kind of happy ending.
Mentally disabled man robbed of his epic Superman collection – Boing Boing: "...48-year-old Mike Meyer, a mentally disabled man who was robbed "of about 1,800 of his favorite Superman comic books, some dating to the 1950s," and cherished collector’s items including lunch boxes, an old-time radio, a Monopoly game and television set..."
'Meyer said mostly only his friends and family knew of his collection, but he also made the mistake once of telling someone less trustworthy: a guy named Gary...  Meyer said he ran into Gary recently while at Kyle’s Baseball Cards and Comics in Granite City. Gary asked Meyer whether he still collected Superman items and asked to see the collection. Meyer first gave an excuse, but then Gary called him later saying he was in the neighborhood and hoped to stop by...  The next night, Gary was back again, asking whether Meyer would let Gary’s girlfriend watch some of his Superman movies. Meyer said while he and the girlfriend watched, Gary disappeared for a while. Meyer noticed the theft two days later, on the morning of Aug. 24, and called police...'
Describing Superman to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Mike said, “He uses his powers not to benefit himself, but to help others, and “He’s the champion of the oppressed.”

Another reason to dig PBS Travel Guru Rick Steves - "Smoking Pot is "My Civil Liberty."

Awesome.
Reason.tv: PBS Travel Guru Rick Steves-Smoking Pot is "My Civil Liberty" - Hit & Run : Reason Magazine: ""I'm a hardworking, tax-paying, kid-raising, church-going citizen of this country," say author and PBS travel host Rick Steves, "and if I work hard all day long and want to go home and relax with a joint, that is my civil liberty.""

"Reason.tv caught up with Steves at Seattle Hempfest in August, where he spoke with Nick Gillespie about marijuana laws and whether his outspoken defense of legalization has effected his books sales, tour bookings, and television career.
Seattle Hempfest is an annual event that started in 1991 as a protest against the prohibition of marijuana, the commercial cultivation of non-psychoactive hemp for a variety of uses, and related issues. For 20 years, tens of thousands of people gather each summer to listen to speakers and bands and to show their support for legalizing pot and hemp products."

This is how they get me - Amazon’s Color Kindle Tablet is coming...

Amazon’s Kindle Tablet Is Very Real. I’ve Seen It, Played With It. | TechCrunch: "It’s called simply the “Amazon Kindle”. But it’s not like any Kindle you’ve seen before. It displays content in full color. It has a 7-inch capacitive touch screen. And it runs Android...
So how much will the 7-inch Kindle cost? $250.
Yes, Amazon has been able to trim the cost of the device to half of the entry-level iPad. And it will be the same price as Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color, which this will very obviously compete with directly. Both have 7-inch color touch screens. Both run Android...
The interface is all Amazon and Kindle. It’s black, dark blue, and a bunch of orange. The main screen is a carousel that looks like Cover Flow in iTunes which displays all the content you have on the device. This includes books, apps, movies, etc. Below the main carousel is a dock to pin your favorite items in one easy-to-access place. When you turn the device horizontally, the dock disappears below the fold...
But the key for Amazon is just how deeply integrated all of their services are. Amazon’s content store is always just one click away. The book reader is a Kindle app (which looks similar to how it does on Android and iOS now). The music player is Amazon’s Cloud Player. The movie player is Amazon’s Instant Video player. The app store is Amazon’s Android Appstore...
...So why will people buy this device instead of a Nook Color? Well, beyond the deep Amazon services integration, there will be two other reasons, I believe. First, Amazon is going to promote the hell out of this thing on Amazon.com. Second, the plan right now is to give buyers a free subscription to Amazon Prime.
The service, which Amazon currently sells for $79 a year, gives users access things like free unlimited two-day shipping, and no minimum purchases for free shipping. More importantly for this product, Prime users get access to Amazon’s Instant Video service. There will be more Kindle-related perks, I imagine..."

Cooking/Food Log.

Prepped for the Mrs.

Above is most, but not all of last week's grub & the last week of 'playing it by ear' after coming off time in the States and getting re-acclimated to life in West Africa.  Besides what's up top there was also a handful of other restaurant and beach food, including the monstrously delicious chocolate pizza I'm devouring to the left.

Starting today back on a more regimented nutritional plan, continuing to log food intake, additionally pre-planning meals every day first thing in the AM.  Still sticking to mostly low carb-ish, paleo-ish, primal-ish foods & bev...  Only significant change is sticking to the 6 day on/1 free day protocol for at least the next 12 weeks.  Onwards.

Training.

9/5 - DB bench press, dips, DB shoulder press, laterals, 1A DB row, pullups/chins, overhead x, bench dips, curls, hammer curls

9/4 - ocean swim

9/3 - pushups, deep breathing, pulldown, pullapart, bi/tri, twisting situps, hindu squats, calf raises, prisoner squats, band press/row/chest pulls/bi-tri/lateral raises

9/2 - circuit x3 - pullups/dips/pushups/bw rows/tri/bi/press/shrug/hyperx/twisting situps

9/1 - hip thrusts/hindu squats/prisoner squats/romanian dl/lunge/goblet squat/sldl/calf raises/hyperx

8/31 - pushups/dips/chins/situps

New training protocol for the next three months - which fits right in the 12 week groove between now and heading back to the States in December for my sis in law's wedding.  Using the old bodybuilding 101 BFL program.  3x week weights/resistance work on an upper/lower body split, 3x week HIIT.  Added ttweaks - additional flexibility and martial arts training.

Robertsport Redux.

Second trip upcountry to the beaches of Robertsport, Liberia.  Vast improvement over the local beaches in Monrovia...

Walkabout.

Casey at the bat, the wiffle ball sequel.

The local accommodations.

I do love the ocean.

Bo Burnham's "Art is Dead" is rather brilliant.

Seen some of Bo Burnham and he's pretty clever and witty, but caught him doing this bit/song on The Green Room with Paul Provenza, and it's dead genius.  Smart, funny, insightful with the right mix of anger, frustration and pathos that makes for awesomeness.  Like one YouTube commentator said "Carlin would be proud."
