Successful and Schizophrenic - NYTimes.com: "Then I made a decision. I would write the narrative of my life. Today I am a chaired professor at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. I have an adjunct appointment in the department of psychiatry at the medical school of the University of California, San Diego, and am on the faculty of the New Center for Psychoanalysis. The MacArthur Foundation gave me a genius grant. Although I fought my diagnosis for many years, I came to accept that I have schizophrenia and will be in treatment the rest of my life. Indeed, excellent psychoanalytic treatment and medication have been critical to my success. What I refused to accept was my prognosis."

Fat Kills… « Chateau Heartiste: "The best the “fat gene” crowd can argue is that most humans are wired to put on excess weight in an environment of plentiful sugar-rich, high glycemic index carb food and sedentary lifestyles. That isn’t the same as saying fat people have fat genes rendering them immune to efforts at long-term weight loss. What it means is that fatsos have to stop eating pastries and pasta, and start getting off their double wide asses and moving their limbs more than they do when reaching like an obese infant for a cookie on the kitchen countertop. The worst of them could begin their training by discarding the Walmart scooters for walking."

ChAoS & PAIN: Dude, So and So Got SO Fucking Jacked For That Movie: Hugh Jackman: "Shockingly, Jackman, whose background prior to X-Men pretty much consisted of the musical Oklahoma, managed to pull off playing Wolverine.  When he first hit the screen as such, he weighed about 180 lbs, somewhat heavier than his natural bodyweight, but a far cry from the nearly 300 lbs of rip he probably should have weighed.  He went on to get leaner and put on 30 more pounds, a transformation that might be described as Kafkaesque if you simply look at Jackman in Oklahoma and then his current incarnation in The Wolverine, but his physique is actually the product of over a decade of lifting.  As such, if you're looking for a quick fix workout for how Jackman got big and lean, you're shit out of luck- it doesn't exist.  Instead, this is a story of one man's journey from being a slightly built member of the musical theater to a growling, jacked badass who now gets considered for any and all action movie roles...

"That's Jackman's primary driver: Instead of setting goals, seek defining moments. Those are the real tests, because you have to be willing to fail in a pressure situation in front of other people. "That fear holds all of us back," Jackman says. "And that's the toughest thing about aging. With age, you see people fail more. You see yourself fail more. How do you keep that fearlessness of a kid? You keep going...  we limit ourselves with goals. We have far more ability than we give ourselves credit for. You see that in people under pressure. How does someone run a 100-meter race at the Olympics? When it's once every 4 years, with everything they've done leading to that? It can't just be adrenaline." Then he nods and smiles. "Maybe it's just the mind getting out of the way.""

Caught this documentary from 2005 yesterday. People are insane/assholes/idiots.  Protocols of Zion (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "The Protocols of Zion is a 2005 documentary film by Jewish filmmaker Marc Levin about a resurgence of antisemitism in the United States in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Armed with his camera and appearing on screen along with his subjects, Levin engages in a free-for-all dialogue with Arab Americans, Black nationalists, evangelists, White nationalists, Kabbalist rabbis, Holocaust survivors, and Frank Weltner, the founder of Jew Watch web site."

"How Stella Got Her Groove Back Married a Gay Dude Who Was Probably Just Looking To Get A VISA." - Terry McMillan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "McMillan married Jamaican Jonathan Plummer in 1998; she was in her late 40s and he in his early 20s. He was the inspiration for the love interest of the main character in her novel How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Her life did not follow the movie when, in December 2004, Plummer told McMillan that he was gay; in March 2005, she filed for divorce.  The divorce was settled for an undisclosed amount."

Liberian Legislature Approves Troop Commitment to Mali: "The Liberian legislature has given its approval, in principle, to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s decision to send troops to Mali.   Sirleaf sent a letter Thursday to the legislative body informing them of her commitment to send a platoon of Liberian soldiers to help in the ongoing regional peacekeeping mission in Mali.  "

J.J. Abrams' 'Star Wars 7': What Will It Look Like? - Music, Celebrity, Artist News | MTV.com: "J.J. Abrams broke the Internet in half on Thursday (January 24) with the announcement that he's directing "Star Wars: Episode VII" for Walt Disney and Lucasfilm. The filmmaker already has two "Star Trek" films under his belt, and now he'll boldly go where no man has ever gone before: directing films set in both the "Trek" and "Wars" universes."

How To Look Awesome Every Day | Intermittent fasting diet for fat loss, muscle gain and health: "Shortly before and after New Year's Eve, there's always a slew of articles and blog posts about how to train and burn off the holiday pounds. They mostly preach the same message about taking it easy and not overdoing it. It's such a tired and boring topic, so I'll spare you that. Last year around this time I wrote an article about how people fail their New Year's resolutions. You might want to check that out if you need some general advice about how not to approach your training and diet in 2010. This time I'll talk about something different. Checkpoints I never feel the need to do any post-holiday dieting. I prefer to look awesome every day and not just three months of the year like many people I know. One of my secrets to staying in shape at all times of the year is a little concept I call "checkpoints". A checkpoint is a pre-determined day during which I note all my relevant stats: my body weight and my strength in four key movements. For each checkpoint, I try to beat the results of the previous checkpoint."

High School Flashback

Christian Bale calls a young cancer patient just to talk about Batman: "...8-year-old leukemia sufferer Zach Guillot, who just happened to receive a lengthy phone call from actor Christian Bale, who wanted to discuss Zach's favorite superhero, Batman, with him. They compare Bat-costumes, discuss what makes Batman so special, and Bale thanks Zach for enjoying The Dark Knight Rises and promises to pass along Zach's love for the film to Chris Nolan, Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy. It's impossibly sweet and kind, and just another reminder that Christian Bale is awesome."

The New Thin: "The funny thing about body image is that most people tend to judge obesity based on their own physique. If you’re overweight and your regular peer group is fatter than you, you tend to think you’re “normal”. It’s similar to eating a donut from a box someone’s brought to work for all to enjoy. If one person is eating a donut it tacitly gives others “permission” to enjoy one too. I was once at a distillery in Panama with a group of Dutch people I work with and a stunningly attractive Panamanian secretary asked me if I was Dutch. I told her, no, I was American and she said “oh, you don’t ‘look’ American. I laughed at this for a minute and asked her what an American ‘looks’ like and she said, “well, they’re all fat.” I took it as a compliment, but I had to agree with her.  You can’t judge a book by it’s cover, but more often than not, it’s a good indicator of what the story’s about."

Matt Damon 'hijacks' Jimmy Kimmel's late night show | CTV News"The butt of a long-running joke on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," the actor opened Thursday night's show as a kidnapper who tied Kimmel to a chair with duct tape and gagged him with his own tie.

"There's a new host in town and his initials are M.D.," Damon said. "That's right, the doctor is in."
For years, Kimmel has joked at the end of his show that he ran out of time and was unable to bring Damon on as a guest. Kimmel was the silent one Thursday, watching from the back of the stage as Damon did his job.

Damon tormented Kimmel by bringing on a succession of big-name guests. Robin Williams stopped by to finish the monologue. Ben Affleck had a walk-on role. Sheryl Crow was the bandleader and performed her new single. Nicole Kidman, Gary Oldman, Amy Adams, Reese Witherspoon and Demi Moore all crowded the talk show's couch...

To twist the knife even further, Damon brought Silverman on as his final guest Thursday night, with Kimmel looking on forlornly as she likened their five-year relationship to an unfortunate trip to a hot dog vendor.
"Is there anything you'd like to say to Jimmy?" Damon asked.
"No, I'm good," Silverman replied.
Then came the sweetest revenge of all, with Damon promising to ungag Kimmel in the show's final minutes.
"Wait," he said. "I'm sorry. We're out of time.""

Liberia mulls Taylor's pension | Africa | DW.DE | 22.01.2013: "In a war crimes court in the Hague, former Liberian president Charles Taylor is appealing his 50-year jail term. He also wants the Liberian government to grant him his ex-president's pension."

Google stands up for Gmail users, requires cops to get a warrant | Ars Technica: "Google said that 22 percent of those requests were made under probable cause driven search warrants delivered via the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA). Authorities have also been known to request information using ECPA suboenas, which are much easier to obtain. It is unclear how many of the subpoenas or warrants that Google complied with—the company has only said it complied in part or in full to 88 percent of total requests from American authorities. "In order to compel us to produce content in Gmail we require an ECPA search warrant," said Chris Gaither, Google spokesperson. "If they come for registration information, that's one thing, but if they ask for content of email that's another thing.""

Think you can multitask? Congratulations, you're probably living a lie.: "Do you fancy yourself a multitasker? Guess again, hotshot. New research suggests you're living a lie. As it turns out, many people who think they can multitask effectively really, really can't. According to University of Utah psychologists David Strayer and David Sanbonmatsu, people who identify as strong multitaskers tend to be impulsive, sensation-seeking and overconfident in their ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously. In fact, note the researchers in the latest issue of PLOS, the people who multitask the most are often the least capable of doing so effectively."

Let elderly people 'hurry up and die', says Japanese minister | World news | guardian.co.uk: "Taro Aso says he would refuse end-of-life care and would 'feel bad' knowing treatment was paid for by government"

Christina Hoff Sommers: Wage Gap Myth Exposed -- By Feminists"If you believe women suffer systemic wage discrimination, read the new American Association of University Women (AAUW) study Graduating to a Pay Gap. Bypass the verbal sleights of hand and take a hard look at the numbers. Women are close to achieving the goal of equal pay for equal work. They may be there already.

How many times have you heard that, for the same work, women receive 77 cents for every dollar a man earns? This alleged unfairness is the basis for the annual Equal Pay Day observed each year about mid-April to symbolize how far into the current year women have to work to catch up with men's earnings from the previous year. If the AAUW is right, Equal Pay Day will now have to be moved to early January.
The AAUW has now joined ranks with serious economists who find that when you control for relevant differences between men and women (occupations, college majors, length of time in workplace) the wage gap narrows to the point of vanishing...
One of the best studies on the wage gap was released in 2009 by the U.S. Department of Labor. It examined more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and concluded that the 23-cent wage gap "may be almost entirely the result of individual choices being made by both male and female workers." In the past, women's groups have ignored or explained away such findings."

The Innocence Penalty: "After serving 15 years in prison for the crime of sexually assaulting his two children, a Utah judge has declared Kevin George Peterson factually innocent...  Alleging "sexual contact short of rape" of course meant the prosecution could convict Peterson without any real physical evidence. It was his word against his kids'. And what kid would lie about a thing like that? More than you'd think. But here's an aspect of wrongful convictions that's often overlooked: Peterson served the full 15 years of a one- to 15-year prison term for child molestation because he refused to admit guilt to the state Board of Pardons. Call it the innocence penalty. Innocent people are of course much less likely to admit to the crimes for which they're accused --before and after conviction. (Although it still happens.) That "lack of remorse" often moves prosecutors to throw the book at them, judges to give them longer sentences, and paroles boards to keep them behind bars for as long as possible."

Old school music throwback...

Thailand jails magazine editor over articles defaming king | World news | guardian.co.uk: "Somyot Prueksakasemsuk of Voice of the Oppressed sentenced to 10 years in prison under lese-majesty law"

Let's Teach Literal Creationism in Public Schools. | Free The Animal: "Kids: If your parents, relatives, or friends profess belief in any sort of supernatural being (God, Jesus, Allah, Ghosts) or places (heaven, hell, purgatory) they are not dealing in reality and no matter how wonderful they may be as parents, family, or friends and no matter how good their intentions, they are giving you false, primitive information based on superstition and ignorance that will likely make you uncompetitive, and potentially, a laughing stock in this modern, increasingly informed and critical world."

The Untouchables: How the Obama administration protected Wall Street from prosecutions | Harry J Enten | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk: "Obama justice officials both shielded and feted these Wall Street oligarchs (who, just by the way, overwhelmingly supported Obama's 2008 presidential campaign) as they simultaneously prosecuted and imprisoned powerless Americans for far more trivial transgressions. As Harvard law professor Larry Lessig put it two weeks ago when expressing anger over the DOJ's persecution of Aaron Swartz: "we live in a world where the architects of the financial crisis regularly dine at the White House.""

US military says Martin Luther King would be proud of its weapons | Glenn Greenwald | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk: "Yesterday, I highlighted the extraordinary anti-war speech Martin Luther King gave in 1967, in which he said, among other things, that the US government is "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today" and the leading exponent of "the deadly Western arrogance that has poisoned the international atmosphere for so long." The speech was devoted to arguing that America's militarism and war-fighting were degrading the soul of the nation and the citizenry and - for financial, political and cultural reasons - were making domestic progress impossible. The US Air Force's Global Strike Command yesterday posted a truly vile bit of propaganda in which it appropriates King's image, name and words in order to claim that he would "be proud to see our Global Strike team . . . standing side-by-side ensuring the most powerful weapons in the US arsenal remain the credible bedrock of our national defense""

Fred On Everything - Severus: "Guns are a curious fracture line: As a nation, America is way and gone the most militarily aggressive country on the planet, as note Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Mali, Mexico, Columbia, Somalia, and so on. The economy is militarized beyond redemption. Yet if a little boy draws a picture of a soldier with a rifle, or a little girl points a gun blowing soap bubbles at a friend, they are likely to be led from school in handcuffs and subjected to psychiatry. "

Atheism Should End Religion, Not Replace It - Room for Debate - NYTimes.com"Religion is not morality. Theists ask me, “If there’s no god, what would stop me from raping and killing everyone I want to.” My answer is always: “I, myself, have raped and killed everyone I want to ... and the number for both is zero.” Behaving morally because of a hope of reward or a fear of punishment is not morality. Morality is not bribery or threats. Religion is bribery and threats. Humans have morality. We don’t need religion."

Living Freedom » Blog Archive » Various & sundry ramblings: "I couldn’t decide whether the Second (or is it third?) Coronation of King Obama was more like a Roman spectacle or more like Germany in the 1930s. All it needed was Leni Riefenstahl."

The Pomp and Circumstance of the Inauguration - Reason.com: "Congressional Quarterly's comprehensive "Guide to the Presidency" helpfully explains that "the only part of the inaugural ceremony that is required by the Constitution is the taking of the oath of office." If only somebody had bothered to check, we could have wrapped it all up Sunday when Chief Justice John Roberts swore Barack Obama in for his second term, and spared ourselves an extra day's worth of pomp, circumstance and dreadful poetry.

After his swearing-in, "Calvin Coolidge simply went to bed in 1925." George Washington's admirably brief second inaugural clocks in at 135 words. But modern presidents fail to appreciate that for presidential inaugurations, as with presidential activism, less is more."
