It's all about shutting off the logical, rational, conscious mind in order to tap into "something else".

The clearest explanation I've read of the difference between the Eastern and Western "mystical" paths...

James Ray:

The Eastern mystic basically sits and clears his mind until he jumps into the realms of God. To fully tap into this current of energy you must adopt the Eastern lifestyle. I dont know about you, but the lotus position is very uncomfortable for me and I am really not fond of long-term fasting and renouncing all my worldly possessions!

The occultist uses the rituals and magickal processes... to distract, direct, and discipline the conscious mind; and thereby propel himself into the same mystical magickal realms of consciousness. Exact same destination -- different approach. While the mystic wants to "ascend" and escape the world, the occultist chooses to "ascend" as well as "descend" and have dominion in the world. In other words, to create life more abundantly in all areas -- physically, financially, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
