Bunkasai

Bunkasai, or culture/art festival, last weekend at Tsuyazaki Jr High. Pretty cool actually. The kids wrote and performed plays/skits, sang, danced, did traditional Japanese drumming [taiko], had a brass band performance... all pretty cool.

During lunch some out of school groups came in and performed... including a talented acapella group and, I kid you not, a bunch of breakdancers.

Japan has a pretty deep and abiding love of/fascination with urban African American culture circa 1985 or so. These guys knocked out routines that were, I swear to god, like watching Rerun off of "What's Happening!" Love for the old-school b-boys and b-girls.

And then the whole thing at the end of the day was closed out with a bunch of these guys dancing with the students onstage.

That's right. The Japanese culture fair was finished off by breakdancers.

The pics didn't come out so great [dark-ish auditorium] but here they are.
